While they would normally be able to deal with such themselves, there is a magical unluck field in effect in the area which is more efficacious the tougher you are and the closer you get to the centre. As such they are unable to approach without fear of a fatal misdemeanor. It seems the field is linked to worship, probably of some goblin god, and is probably related to an artefact.
