Details

This is a rocky island which rises almost 1000ft above the waves with almost sheer cliffs all around the island except for a port on the eastern side which provides the only access to the rest of the island. To get to the level of the island proper one must pass up the cliff and over the 888 steps which zigzag their way up the cliffs. Access to the inner island is only known to the locals and no others are allowed there on pain of death.
The port is serviced from the upper island by a set of 2 large lifts which can take a large amount of goods up the sheer cliff-face or down from the upper island.
The port itself is 800ft wide and 1300ft long in a rectangular shape and is fashioned from rock so there is limited berths for ships coming to sell goods or buy the local produce.

The houses (which can be seen from sea level) are built into the rock of the island and have been dug down over the centuries to a level cooler than the usual temperatures and some of the street which are up to 20ft below street level are partially covered which provides wind tunnels during the heat of summer and adds to the cooling effects.

Vanuta Island has no rivers and water is scarce, but vast underground cisterns are filled between mid-autumn to mid-spring by the rains which usually provide enough water each year. Otherwise there are a few small springs which provide water to select areas on the island. Since rain is rare on the island from mid-spring till mid-autumn, many plants depend on the scant moisture provided by the common, early morning fog condensing on the ground as dew.
The island is the home of a small wine industry and the pride of the island is the sweet and strong Vynsanto, a wine made from the best sun-dried grapes and undergoing long barrel aging (possibly up to 20 or 25 years) for the prime barrels. It matures to a sweet, dark amber-orange, unctuous wine that is famous for its taste. White wines from the island are extremely dry with strong citrusy aromas. The yield per acre is only 10 to 20% of the yields that are common in more water rich soils but have a stronger flavour.
Due to its unique ecology/climate and especially its volcanic ash soil, Vanuta is home to prized produce. The Vanuta tomatoes, large cucumbers and the rare white eggplants grown here are renowned. The goats of the island are used to make a cheese favoured by some named Chorotyri.
