The most important waterway for commerce in the Western Kingdom.

The Baratary River has its headwaters in the Dragonspine Mountains beyond Gracht and Syborite, and from there flows down along the western border of the Marquisate of Middlemarch, joins up with the Eridanys River (north of Innesburg) through Innesburg, and the Barony of Baratary. This major river marks the often contested boundaries between Aquila, Aladar, and Bowcourt, before passing the Barony of Dumas, joining with the Montrachet River and then emptying into the Ffenargh swamp.

The navigable length of the river used to end at the Ffenargh, but in early 790's dredging work undertaken by the Theocracy opened a route to the sea, greatly increasing trade on the river.

Changes post 813 WK

The Drow invasion, associated destruction of Zumular and local area, followed by the freezing effects of the ice road (which dammed tributaries leading to creation of new swampland) and finally the melting ice road initiating massive flooding at the end of the invasion have all caused significant damage to the areas along the river as far north as Innesburg, and changes in its course at the southern end. Some of the enduring damage appears to be magical in nature and reminiscent of the magical devastation associated with the ancient civil war of the elves, albeit on a much smaller scale.

The river remains a major trade route but has become more dangerous, and there are areas of both banks where sailors are advised not to land. Particularly notable stretches are in the Barony of Baratary near the ruins of Bragelonne, and in the swampy area around and north of the confluence with the Vargon River tributary, and near the ruined towns of Montsoreau and Beaumont.
