The town was originally a planned walled town set on a plateau a mile from the coast with a separate small settlement for fisher-folk and the wharves. The city has outgrown its more humble beginnings and now stretches all the way to the coastline and out to the west of the original town.
The original town walls still stand and now form the boundary for the administrative centre of the province. This centre houses over 200 clerical and advisory staff and administers not only the province but the huge trading fleet that provides most of the provinces income.

- The gardens of Pasir
- To the east of the town a newer wall surrounds a large well cultivated garden that has been added to and extended by all of the Princes for the last 200 years. Gardeners look after the flora and fauna 24 hours a day and there are regular expeditions mounted to obtain additional animals or plants for the gardens.
