Rulebook 2006 Change Summary

This page gives a summary of changes to the Rulebook 2006. It is essentially an abbreviated version of what was 'Pending Rule Changes', now 2006 Rule Changes, with major Rulebook formatting changes added. Not every clarification, punctuation fix and spelling correction is listed.


0. Title Page, History, Contents, etc.

  • Change to 2006 Revision, Edition 1.6
  • Add History of Edition 1.6

2. Character Generation

  • Social Status table - As per the original document, the range of Goodman should be 30-44, not 30-40.
  • Conception chances - moved (with sentence on how to use them) to 5. Health and Fitness (no rule change)

5. Health and Fitness

Conception

Add new section after 5.7 Infection. Move percentages and text from Character Generation to this new section

6. Ranking

  • Add 6 month limit to learn a new rank in anything.
  • Note ability to learn subskill without gaining a rank in skill
  • Improve entries for Names to remove any doubt about how it works (no rule change)

7. Magic

7.2 How Magic Works

  • Add default rule about using material components Spells and Rituals
    • If a spell or ritual also has a Material Cost then unless stated otherwise in the description, these materials are consumed during the casting of the magic regardless of the success or failure of the casting.

7.7 Backfires

  • Resolve inconsistency between 7.2 How Magic Works (rituals backfire on +30) and 7.7 Backfire (+40). Former is correct.
  • Move references to alternate backfire tables to GM Guide.

7.10 The Colleges of Magic

  • Knowledge Limitations, first para
    • Old Text: (except Ritual Spell Preparation, and the General Knowledge spells of Namers).
    • New Text: "(except Ritual Spell Preparation, and as specified in the Namer College)."

Non-College Magic

  • Geas reworded to use 'target' and 'geased entity' rather than the mixture of terms in 2004 Rulebook.

13. The College of Binding and Animating Magics

Binding Permanency (R-1)

  • Can now cast without materials to give a duration in days to some spells.

13.13 Golem Statistics

  • Change MA: 0 to MA: None to reflect text of rituals.
  • Add a column to the Golem statistics table to specify the average weight of golems based on size and type.

15 The College of Illusions

Permanency (R-3)

  • Can now cast without materials to give a duration in days to some spells.

17. The College of Naming Incantations

17.2 Namer Benefits

Namer True Seeing (S-10)

  • Reword to make clear that the area affected is the spell range as a radius centred on the Adept. Anyone (not just the Adept) may attempt to observe revealed oddness. (no rule change).

18. The College of Air Magics

Weather Scale Table

  • Remove asterisks and references to rank-based limits
  • add ref to 'normal climatic range' to R-3 note
  • Change last column of 3rd sub-table to reasonable precipitation rates

19. The College of Celestial Magics (Ver 1.3)

Shadow Form / Coruscade (G-4)

  • Reword so that spell increases target's DEF rather than modifying striker's SC

Failing Star (S-10 Star)

  • Change name to "Falling Star (S-10 Star)"

25 The College of Necromantic Conjurations

Stream of Corruption (S-14)

  • Reword to include 'corrosive', and make explicit that it affects all entities, including undead and constructs.

26 The College of Rune Magics

  • Remove the 'no new characters' restriction.
  • Replace un-used version with playtest version, number as version 2.2

29 Adventuring Skills

29.1 Climbing

  • Remove separate skills for claws and ropes per Climbing

29.5 Orienteering

Remove obsolete section

31 Armourer

31.2 Benefits

  • Rewrite time forula so that Effective Rk 0 armour takes Base days to construct, with the Base days sepcified for each type of armour.

39. Languages

  • New languages added to 39.6 Language Families and 39.7 Language groups.
    • Kipchak[8] (Central-Human, Nomadic)
    • Eloran [9e,w] (Eldar, Elvidic)
  • Merfolk is Rk8, Mer alphabet, Perfidic Group
  • move Language Groups and Language Familes listings to separate page.

46. Spy

  • New Version per original resolution
  • Clarify that they get to choose an optional ability at Rank 0

47. Thief

47.2 Benefits

  • Remove EP discount for having higher Spy rank.

50 Weaponsmith

50.4 Silvering and Gilding weapons

  • Rewrite so that Weaponsmiths get discount on silvering etc, and ranks applied don't effect cost of silvering

  • The Skills listed below have sub-skills that may now be learnt without increasing in rank.
    • Armourer
    • Beastmaster
    • Courtier
    • Mechanician
    • Merchant
    • Military Scientist
    • Spy
    • Troubadour
    • Weaponsmith
  • All these subskills to take 4 weeks and EP per the Skills EP table to learn. Note that the time and EP is reduced to 75% at Rank 8 and 50% at Rank 10.

52 Fumble, 53 Backfire, 54 Fright & Awe Tables

  • Reformatted

55.1 Weapons EP table

  • Add Lasso (already in 56.1 Weapons), with same costs as Whip

55.2 Skills EP table

  • Subskill costs added
  • Notes re-organised and updated

56.1 Weapons Table

  • Remove Katana (conflicts with GM Guide version)

56.2 Shield Table

  • Note that a main guache has no defense bonus at Rank 0.
