Q What would distract the Gargoyles?
A Heinz

Heinz apparently has an interesting vampire talent, he can take on various physical characteristics of blood that he has recently drunk. When you met him he was very hairy, and had a thick skin. He now has an apparatus that he can use to inject samples of blood directly into his system from canisters that he carries on clockwork harness that is now mostly part of him. According to the Goblins he is an avid collector and will go out of his way to find blood that he has not seen before, even if it is not of any particular use to him.

From this, Heinz may be very interested in the gecko-like Basilisk that the Gargoyles have. Getting Heinz to try and steal this creature (being mindful that it can turn creatures to stone) might be the basis of how to distract the Gargoyles.

Scrying on the Gargolyes

You break out the crystals of vision. Balls and shards get unwrapped or removed from their containers.

You check out the top of the mountain. Uzi has been there before so it is easy to pinpoint it with his crystals.

A few hundred feet below the highest peak is the cave where the Gargoyles live. It is a triangular opening between two huge slabs and the ridge running outside. The ridge is fairly flat and safe enough to land on if one is an experienced flier (and there are no complications).

Using Uzi's and Dalran's crystals you can move around a bit and see it from different angles and observe for a while. You find out that about 20 feet into the cave (and around a slight bend) some Rk20 darkness starts that obscures the insides from view, you cannot obviously use the crystals to scry past that. None of you have been any further than the ledge outside so don't know what it looks like inside.

Sabastian and others (I think it was Ishmael and Belladona) landed on this ledge to discuss with the Gargoyles the release of their statue prisoners. You rigged up a mechanician contraption to get the statue of Brother Zephyr out and down off the mountain slightly over a year ago (you de-stoned him at the guild).

Watching the mountain top for a day you see a gecko-like basilisk come out, sniff around and do its business outside below the ridge line (its business drops off hundreds of feet down the cliff). You can see that it has no problems going up and down the mountain sides, which don't slow it down at all.

You also see a regular looking gargoyle (small 3' tall ugly looking, winged thing) fly out with a small sack and gather what looks like rocks and crystals from around the mountain as well as attending to some small animal traps. He brings the animals and minerals back to the cave.

Inside the cave

A crystal is focused inside the cave. It is opulently fitted out, with expensive looking eastern rugs on the floors and walls. These are also draped over a number of what look like stone chaise lounge. When the gargoyles come in you can see them drape themselves over these. The small gargoyle has a perch in the corner. The basilisk has an open stone pot in another corner, with some blankets and the remains of chew toys around it.

There are book cases cut into the walls, with a few books, some games and nick-knacks.

Off this cave there are (what you can only assume) openings, covered in impenetrable darkness.

Zephyr tells you that this was the only place he saw. He was led through the entrance, but it wasn't covered in darkness at that time. He thinks they have become more security conscious since they were overrun by undead.
