Cartae Arcanarum
Cartae Arcanarum are magical images. The images are unique, in the sense that when they are copied, the original is destroyed. Usually, this means the image is transferable from one form of card stock to another, but only one such copy can ever be made.
A Carta is added to the owner's deck, and is nothing more than a brightly coloured playing or divinatory card. However, the Carta can be empowered by playing it on the occasion of a specified category of event. The description of the Carta itself will define what this will be. It may be played some time in the future to release its magic, which usually only requires a Free Act.
Regardless of the number of Cartae a character has, only one of them can be cmpowered per night of play. They can play as many empowered Cartae as they have Free Acts, of course.
There are two main kinds of Cartae, lesser and greater. The lesser Cartae always have a suit and are divided into Imagoes or Masques, and Calculi. Imagoes are Cartae that hold portraits, Calculi are Cartae that contain a number of their suit. Aces are special Calculi.
The greater are more powerful than the lesser, but sometimes the lesser are more useful.
