Bolton Bay

Bolton Bay has a gentle shingle beach and provides a sheltered anchorage. To the north of the bay is the Pallisades, to the south the Hills of the Halfborn. The Shoals of Lyr guard the entrance to the bay.
Much of the land immediately behind the beach is low and swampy; in places, these swamps extend several miles inland. Inland from the swamp is the Plain of Desai.

At the Northern end of the bay is the settlement of Bolton Manor.
The fields of this settlement follow the river between the Village of Thorns Landing on the edge of the Bay and the lake around the Manor house, some 3-4 miles inland.

Due to its isolation, the Manor house has been constructed as a concentric castle.
Its major defense consists of a small artificial lake (approx. 1100-1200 yards across) that has turned a low hill into an octagonal island (700 yards across). The dam that forms the lake stands at the western end of the valley.
Stone barbicains and gatehouses guard the stone and timber causeways that lead to the centre of the island's Northern and southern shores.
The island is ringed by a low crenellated stone wall; there are round stone towers at each corner and in the middle of five of the six remaining walls. In the middle of the southeast wall is a watergate flanked by square towers.

Crenellated stone walls form a matching octagon 200 yards from the shore. There are stone gatehouses in the centre of the east and west walls; there are round stone towers in the centres of the other six as well as on all the corners.
In the centre of the island stands the Keep, an Octagonal structure 100 yards across. It has thick walls, wide gates and large windows.

A Clan of Gargoyles took up residence in the cliffs of the northern headland of the bay in the late summer of 808wk. These creatures are sworn vassals of Lady Thorn and charged with assisting her in monitoring Shipping in the area. See Swamp Exploration

Update of a few notes as of 825

  • Giant bunny rabbits are living in the area. These are magic sensitive, both able to detect it, and slightly allergic to spells cast directly at them. They are also untamable via any means.
  • Permanent portals in the area are known to be unstable. This is believed to be due to the high-magic surrounding regions.
  • Bolton Bay township is occasionally low magic, coinciding typically with increased population due to the seasonal cattle drives.
