Uptown is the single row of blocks that back onto the Promise of Heaven, the Palace, and the avenue between them along the eastern wall of Sanctuary. It is where the people with the wealth and prestige live. Everyone in Sanctuary aims to move Uptown eventually. Many Uptowners are nobles; some are merchants, or mages, or priests. Most inhabitants, ironically, are the guards, servants and slaves working for the rich and powerful, and these certainly make up most of the street traffic.

Uptown has cobbled streets that are kept clean at most times. Beggars and mendicants are not allowed on the streets. The wealthy usually travel by carriage, curricle, palanquin or horse, and will have at least one companion, escort or bodyguard with them at all times.

Places

  • Hennessey's – The Gentlemen's club. A dozen Stepsons guard the main entrance. Members and invited guests only. Most of the major financial players do a large part of their business at Hennessey's. Opposite is a gaming house where bodyguards must wait.
  • A number of expensive Manors.

People of Note

  • Bakarat – the most successful merchant in Sanctuary and de facto head of the elven community.
  • Ischade – necromancer, thief, seducer, murderer and politician. Owns Peres House.
  • Izamel - A member of the ancient aristocracy.
  • Nuphtantei – a beautiful socialite who lives in one of uptown's most elegant mansions.
  • Serena – an elven noble. She is a placid, peaceful, slightly dotty elven matron, who has outlived all her enemies. She is a patron of the arts.
  • Shafralain – local nobleman who can trace his lineage and his money back to the days of Ilsig's glory.
  • Terapis – an arrogant and well-dressed young Rankene nobleman.

Law

The garrison take good care of the inhabitants of Uptown, who pay their salaries. In addition, bodyguards may protect their wards with lethal force. A group of armed and dangerous intruders may cause many bodyguards from different employers to co-operate, or the summoning of guards or hired mages.
