Well before the establishment of the Church, the races of mountain dwellers lived in an uneasy alliance, disrupted by long and gory wars. They did not even notice when the plains people grew beyond simple savagery, built
boats, sailed off and came back with a new religion. Some of the observant ones took notes as the new religion became a church, fractured and then by a bloody process of its' own unified to become The Church.
The real fun started when The Church came to 'civilise' the mountain regions. Now there was a battle on two fronts.
The Dwarven clan of Glitterteeth lead the now united mountain races against these upstarts.
"Humanity breeds like ... well, humans; and the stout people don't".
If his race was going to survive then Onan Glittertooth had to surrender.
He used his best Orcish negotiators (they don't lose their temper as quickly as dwarfs) to affect a reasonable ransom.
Today, his distant grandchild Ashven Denteoro, reigns over the local mountain dwellers under the watchful eye of The Church.
Dwarfs do not change in stature or nature from one plane of existence to the next! He is short and irascible – other than that he is fair in his dealings and harsh in his punishments. His people respect and honour him.
Ashven is married to Sharra. She is also short and irascible and they love each other dearly.
The dwarves pay lip service to The Church and an observant type will see hints that they still practise the old ways. This is illegal under the ancient terms of surrender and punishable by death of the whole family (familgliaside).
Of Dwarfs
The Dwarvish nations are the oldest surviving people in within the boundaries of the Glorious Empire of Sho'ahyah.
Even so – they are a subjugated race, having lost the Great War to The Church.
As with dwarfs across the multiverse – they are short and irascible. Their love for wealth never changes, nor does their artistry in sculpting and subterranean architecture.
The dwarves of Sho'ahyah have become magically adept. Their schools are that of elemental mastery – Mostly Earth and Water, but they do have people to work Fire, Air and Mystery.
