When they entered Tlaloc's temple the horrific wall carvings where still 'powered' – appearing to move slightly and vibrant with colour. Now they are stationary and the colours have faded. The Temple of Left Handed Hummingbird

Left Handed Hummingbird is sculpted on the west wall of the western subterranean temple - a seven foot tall oval faced humanoid with Incan/Aztec features with a blue painted face. Wears a gold headdress with narrow hummingbird beak over face, long blue feathers drop from the peak of the head-dress. Carries four arrows and a serpent-like blue staff. Clothes glitter with jade, turquoise and gold. Bracers of gold on wrists and ankles, surrounded by cloud of hummingbirds.

Mosaics

Surrounding that carving is a series of mosaics that show his story of conception and birth.

  • His mother is shown as a mortal and impregnated by his god father – as a ball of feathers descending from above. His sister planned to kill their mother because she became pregnant in such a shameful way.
  • Left Handed Hummingbird learned of this plan while still in the womb, and he sprang from his mother's womb fully grown and fully armed. He then killed his sister and many of his 400 brothers. He tossed his sister's head into the sky, where it became the moon, so that his mother would be comforted in seeing her daughter in the sky every night. He threw his other brothers and sisters into the sky, where they became the stars.
On other walls the carvings show images of priest and prisoners.

Berserk priests combat enemy (apparently without regard to own lives) - and take prisoners to be sacrificed in Left Handed Hummingbird's name. The victims are held down on the altar while a Mexica priest carves off bits of flesh to give to the gathered host of worshippers, producing blood frenzy as they fight receive this sacrament of their master.
