Chartres has significant acreage under viticulture, especially in the east along the stretch of the Montrachet River south of Borderlay. Whether this is the Haut Montrachet of the famed Borderlay wines is a matter of some dispute; Borderlay claims that the upper part of the river ends at their southern border while Chartres asserts that it remains Haut until the confluence with the Alp River. In either case, the vineyards along that stretch of river produce notably better vintages than those south of the Alp or along the Adour River to the west of Chartres.
