Recipes from Insel der Freiheit
While we were travelling around I noted a range of odd ways of spicing up snake meat and monkey meat, which seemed to be a large proportion of the meat eaten on the island. Here are some of the odd ways I saw them using. Plus some strange dishes I saw Kergoth trying. Be warned, he was sick alot on this trip.
- Dunky sauce for raw snake.
Some sort of sweet and sour sauce, using fruit and spices. The raw snake put me off.
- Perut ikan (which basically came down to fish stomachs)
They cook the fish innards in some sort of coconut milky sauce (very spicey), add some mint and spread it onto sliced beans and pineapple to eat. It smelled very fishy, I asked if they had any without the fish they looked at me strangely.
- Tempoyak (stinky fruit spicey dish)
They had this really foul smelling fruit in the jungle that they eat. This dish has the fruit soaking in salt inside a sealed pottery jar. It is then mixed with spices and eaten with rice. Tasted nice, but hold the nose while eating it.
- Siat (spicey grubs)
They take these grubs they collect from the dead wood of trees fallen in the jungle and hot fry them quickly with little onions and ginger and serve straight away. If you are lucky the grubs have stopped moving before you start eating them.
- Fish-head curry
They cook up this lovely spicey sauce, add a few vegetables, onions and coconut milk and then boil fish heads in it. Apparantly the best bits are the eyeballs. Yucky. Made me feel ill just looking at it.
