Mages

I think we should cover off why magical ability doesn't help with enlistment. Perhaps a note in the auxiliaries that any mages are signed up as engineers (to put them under military discipline) on a as-required temporary basis. --Errol 21:19, 12 Feb 2007 (NZDT) (not touching the main article while Chris might be editing it).

From a game perspective, I think it is because it is good for the warrior type characters and if all mages can do it as well then it detracts from those who play warriors a little. There is bugger all reason to play non-mages as it is other than something a little different.

Absolutely agree, any use of mages (as mages) by the army should be in an adventure (or handled like the special training available for DC service). I think we should give an in-game explanation, given how useful mages are to an army. --Errol 22:08, 12 Feb 2007 (NZDT)

The fact is that mages are really good at skirmish, they make excellent scouts and small infiltration groups etc, but most mages are not going to be a great help when 1000+ people start to shove each other around the place. Thus most mages are not as useful to an army as a rank 4 healer. Sure the guild does have mages who could go through an anemy army like a knife through butter but most are going to be able to join based on the other requirements anyway :-)

I would be stunned if the army didn't have at least a handful of mages available that can cast flying magic, as the improvement in scouting and communication ability is dramatic. I'm also sure that the mages concerned are not SAG members. :-)
