Ancient History

Pre PenjarreInitially, Sanctuary was a seaside resort town for elves called Senturae.
0 APPenjarre shattered the magical travel networks, and most of the elves withdrew over the mountains and turned inwards.
1–800 APThe far-flung elven settlements across the Baronies were either over-run by humans, or their inhabitants withdrew to Alfheim. Senturae survived in co-operation with the local humans, the Ilsigi tribes. A mixed community developed slowly, with mistrust on both sides and the occasional setback.

The Western Kingdom is founded. It does not yet reach south beyond the Fenargh Swamp.
1382 AP / 182 WKDuke Erasmus decides that Ranke needs to expand trade via the sea to be treated as a full member of the Western Kingdom. Overtures and investment in Senturae starts.
1387 AP / 187 WKUrielite missionaries from Aquila arrive and rename the town after Saint Uriel. They are initially only allowed on an off-shore isle, soon known as God Rock. A fortified monastery is built.
1523 AP / 323 WKSaint Uriel has become accustomed to the flow of trade, and becomes affiliated with Ranke. A Governor is send from Ranke. Vashanka is replaced by Uriel as the official religion. Riots and protests occur intermittently over the next fifty years.
1694 AP / 494 WKKing Sigismund heads through Ranke on his journey into the Sea of Grass – he is never seen again. The Western Kingdom crumbles under the weight of its in-fighting.
1736 APThe long-suppressed Ilsigi will for independence reasserts itself; Rankene forces lose control of Ilsig town and lose interest in trying to maintain St Uri, as a trade town with little or no trade coming through. Sanctuary and Ilsig form an intermittent alliance against Rankene imperialism.
1812 APThe Ilsigi rulers have become weak and treacherous and Sanctuary grows in wealth. The Ilsigi murder the Sanctuary ambassador, and diplomatic contacts are lost. Several ruling houses follow each other into oblivion in quick succession.
1956 APA resurgent Ranke and yet another failing royal Ilsig line result in Ilsig marrying into Ranke, and its independence is lost. Sanctuary is still a free town, thriving on renewed trade with Ranke and the southern traders.
1984 AP / 784 WKDuke Abakithis renews the notion of Governors for Sanctuary, and sends his half-brother Kadakithis there as punishment. To his surprise, both prosper.

Recent History

784 WKThe new Governor arrives in town with Hellhounds in tow. The Promise of Heaven is levelled and turned into a park. Local religions and commerce are not touched. After an initial tense period, Sanctuary settles down.
786 WKTempus swaggers into town. Nominally a Hellhound, he imposes order as he sees fit, and makes many enemies. He converts Sanctuary’s patron god from Vaskanka to Berith.
788 WKWalegrin arrives from the Capital to help reshape the corrupt garrison.
790 WKTempus’ personal army of fanatics, the Stepsons, start trickling into town. They fail to take on the Hawkmasks and the Maze denizens, so pull back and consolidate.
792 WKDestiny blockades after the Scavengers hit bullion shipments
794 WKThe Stepsons pull out, and spend two years fighting for Innesburg. A token force remains.
794 WKWalegrin brings in a mercenary company to fill the absence left by the Stepsons. These mercs are far more professional and law-abiding, and are taken to heart by Uptown.
794 WKThe crime-lord Jubal joins high society with Tempus not about to prevent him. Crime drops by 30% and the tax intake surges.
796 WKThe Stepsons return from the War, and take over control of the north of the town. They fail to crack the Maze or Hawkmasks.
797 WKDestiny blockades when its ambassador is mugged and Kadakithis blames Destiny’s foreign policy.
798 WKGyskouras is born as an emerging divinity, disrupted by Sammael’s conversion. Elvish intervention and Star’s birth drain enough power from Gyskouras to prevent an ascension.
800 WKCime hits the Mage Guild, killing many and freeing some cursed prisoners. She marries Askelon, one of her victims.
801 WKThe Popular Ilsigi Liberation Force (Pilf) is born in a Silberton tavern.
801 WKPrincess Daphne is enslaved and sold to the Isles of Adventure. Chenaya rescues her. Daphne never forgives Kadakithis.
802 WKRiding a swell of support, Chenaya makes her move, attempting to overthrow Duke Abakithis. She fails and is exiled.
803 WKJubal is finally cornered by Tempus and the Stepsons, and is presumed dead. The Hawkmasks effectively disband.
803 WKThe False Plague Riots break out. The Stepsons ignore it, concentrating on finding the last of the Hawkmasks.
The Stepsons head off to war in Carzala as soon as they disband the Hawkmasks. The Plague Riots continue.
803 WKThe Third Command mercenaries are called in to cover for the Stepsons. They help restore order in the north of the town.
The Gladiatorial combats at the Stadium are closed. The Third Command moves into the Stadium.
803 WKThe Pilf restore order in the south of Sanctuary, and are now a player.
805 WKThe Stepsons head off to the Dark Circle war in Southern Ranke.
805 WKThe Hawkmasks re-form, although Jubal doesn’t resume his place in society. They start taking the streets back from the Pilf.
806 WKThe Stepsons are destroyed by the Dark Circle and the Church Knights. Tempus slinks back alone. An old Elven merchant house falls.
806 WKThe Hawkmasks and Pilf turf war turns nasty. Innocent casualties top 100. The Hellhounds are called in to restore order. The gladiators win the right to reestablish the gladitorial arena.
807 WK (preview) A local Arts Festival becomes a bloodbath as Seagate adventurers clash with Hellhounds, a demonic cult, and mimes. A palace concubine is sent in to restore order. (to be continued)
