Overview

Vergt is covered with golden wheat fields rippling in gentle breezes. Vergt is very peaceful, law-abiding and orderly - little excitement happens, and the locals like it that way. Locals have a profound respect for law and tradition, and are generally interested in the past and precedent. This has led to a study of heraldry and law at several places, best-known of which is the University of Lisle.

Most Vergs prefer defined categories and social roles, making the See very staid and old-fashioned. One's role in life is defined by one's social rank and birth-place. Sons take after their fathers, daughters after their mothers. Social mobility is uncommon. Peasants rarely move to towns, townsfolk rarely become mercantile or gentile, and responsibilties and positions of employment are often inherited, even in the church.

Places of Interest

  • University of Lisle. This University was the first college to specialise in the training of advocates for both canon and secular law. It has a deep and rich history, and traditions play a stronger part here than in most similar academies. All students and learned Masters must wear the correct attire for their rank, and ceremonies for confirment of degrees, passing courses, and promotions are long and involved.
  • Cornille Abbey. This Abbey is home to the highest legal court of appeal in Mordeaux. Legal rulings made in other Sees (even by their rulers), by any authority except by His Grace or the four Suffragan Bishops, may be overturned in this court. Decisions made here may not be overturned except by His Grace or divine intervention.
  • Brouchaud. This Abbey and its surrounding town is the administrative hub of Vergt.

People

  • Reverend Canon Amand de Vergt , Urielite Abbot of Brouchaud and current administrator of Vergt. The Reverend Canon is in his thirties, but seems very dry and fusty for such a young man. He is a highly-respected Advocate, and one of the three current Justicars of Cornille, although he excuses himself for high-profile political cases to avoid perceived conflicts of interest. He is precise and careful, and will never make snap decisions or allow himself to be rushed. Protocol must always be observed in his presence.
  • Saint Léon sur Lisle is one of the three current Justicars of Cornille. He has something of a reputation as a reformist and revisionist, and is thus viewed with suspicion by some locals. He has recently cleared several high-profile people of heresy, and so is not liked by many in the Michaeline and Gabrielite cults.
