Pre-Newhaven History
Little is known about the history of the Chubb's Bay before the founding of Newhaven, apart from that found during investigations and artefacts discovered during the settlement.

The Elves
The earliest evidence of habitation of the Newhaven area come from a large Elven portal created from the cliff at Newhaven. The elves seem to have left the area about 2000 years ago, the last time the portal was used. An buried Elven canal that extended from the portal to the sea has been re-excavated and repaired, and now re-used for transport to and from Newhaven Castle.

Other Recent Inhabitants
There are a few signs of other minor settlements within Chubb's bay.
The limestone Caves in the cliffs were inhabited by a small group of dwarves until around 25 years before Newhaven. There is also evidence of a temporary use by settlers at the southern end of the bay that look to have been driven out or killed by bands of goblins or orcs.

The Founding of Newhaven
Newhaven was first explored for settlement by Adventurers from the Seagate Adventurers Guild in 793wk, who became known as the Founders of Newhaven.

The Enchanted Years
The first years of Newhaven were a period of growth and excitement for the new immigrants, many of whom were invited to Newhaven by the Founders of Newhaven themselves, and of after missions of mercy and bravery to rid their former homelands of great evils. It was an undertaking of great risk, but those families that made the journey have been well rewarded by the rich new lands.

Logan was appointed Baron on the Founding of Newhaven. Baron Logan was generally loved by the people for his kind nature, and always had a warm welcome to all those that met him. He was considered a Baron "from the people, for the people". Amongst Logan's well liked decrees was the award of The Gift of Enchantment, bestowed on a family for exceptional service to the Barony and community. It is awarded from public nomination as part of the annual Founding Celebrations, but also by Baron Logan at other times for individual cases of exceptional service.

Logan worked closely with Engalton on matters of law and state, a partnership that worked well. (Some joked of The Barons Carrot and Stick, but never aloud.) Some thought Baron Logan soft and tried to take advantage of his good nature. Those people were invariably discovered though, and dealt with appropriately and sometimes severely through Newhaven law. Engalton was appointed Sherrif of Newhaven during this time, responsible for Law and Order. He was known to be fair, but quick in judgement and severe in punishment. Every criminal brought before him has confess totally and completely to his crimes, without fail.

There are whispered tales of how Engalton has killed people out of hand, only to later bring them back to life, then control them totally and get them to performing torturous tasks almost to their death again. Such tales have some scared into wondering about Engalton's relationships with known Orcish Necromancers, confusing to those that otherwise know Engalton as a Hero of Seagate, a well respected and fair man.

The first decade of Newhaven are sometimes referred to as the "The Enchanted Years", both in reference to the prosperity of the original immigrants to Newhaven, as well as to reference to their Baron and his gifts.

Recent Years
Baron Logan formally passed on the office of Baron of Newhaven to Engalton in 803wk after 10 years of active service.
The years since then have seen Newhaven bear a major war, with mounting tension and uncertainty for the growing community. A large influx of refugees from a nation conquered in the War did not always integrate with the local people, and put pressure on Newhaven. Tensions raised and ther was open talk of Baron Engalton imprisoning their rightful Prince for personal gain. Latest events see large Elven and Drow warships moored ominously in the harbour, while Engalton is granted the title of Count and the prince is returned to his homeland.

Chronology of Major Events
After 10 years of active service, Baron Logan formally passes on the office of Baron of Newhaven to Baron Engalton. The public celebrations concluded on the Spring Equinox with the official "Ceremony of Transfer" as witnessed by the Founders of Newhaven.

Congratulations on your purchase of your Castle Defense System ®.
This state of the art system offers superior firepower, outstanding detection capabilities and a lifetime guarantee on parts and service.
Included with your deluxe package are five independent auto-launching DTJ projectors each fully equipped with Hellfire tm targeting and tracking systems. Full upgrades to your castles stone work, iron work and wood work with magikal tm binding offering premium protection against siege attacks (up to 40 points per hit regardless of the number of hits per pulse) Also included in your deluxe package are five rank 15 earth elementals (for those tricky subterranean attacks) and two rank 15 water elementals to enhance your moat security.
Each of the five DTJ projectors is capable of launching up to six rank 20 DTJs per pulse against targets detected within a 15 mile radius of the launcher location. Thanks to Hellfire tm targeting each DTJ once locked onto its target will not miss! Only if the target moves out of the projectors range (fifteen mile radius) will the DTJ evaporate before striking the target. (Note this does not limit each DTJ to fifteen miles travel, just the operating radius of each DTJ in comparison to the projectors location) Friendly zones can be defined within the castles defense area to allow the approach of non authorised persons. These zones can be made hot at a moments notice if the operator desires. Each launchers Hellfire tm tracking system displays unauthorised entities on a Krystal ® ball image enhancer. This image enhancer will display friendly/authorised entities as green dots and unfriendly entities as red dots. Authorisation is achieved either through individual aura registration or the application of an authority crystal. Entities with aura registration will appear dark green on the Krystal ® ball image enhancer, authority crystal Entities light green. Tracking and targeting priorities are set by a combination of aural and movement rate fully customisable matrixes. (Include or exclude auras at your leisure. No more pesky possums in your realm!)
As a soon as an unauthorised entity enters the air or groundspace of a launcher a green targeting square will appear around the entity. After a pulse the square will turn red to indicate that DTJs have been launched. At this point the operator has limited time to cancel the launch.
At 1466 hexes per pulse each DTJ will reach the border of its kill zone in 11pulses. Each DTJ will inflict (D-4) + 20 damage. (Damage is physical as well as magical and may stun the target) Entities will continue to be targeted until they are destroyed. Thanks to Hellfire tm tracking any DTJs launched before the entity was destroyed and still in flight after the entity was destroyed will retarget to the nearest unauthorised entity after one pulse.
Hellfire tm tracking operates in three dimensions and will also detect incoming unfriendly entities underground. The option to destroy these threats is available via your earth elemental task force. These sleepless leviathans will remorselessly hunt down and crush any intruding offenders. Like wise your Moat/Seafront will be similarly defended by the water elementals included in your package. Control of these elementals can be via the CDS launchers or verbally from authorised personnel. Chain of command ® authority functions are built into and are fully customisable by you the owner of this deluxe package.
We wish you well in your future endeavours and look forward to more custom in the future.
Castle Defence Systems have been sold and marketed by Damon Salaneous. Damon is an incubi who has been let off the leash by Leraje (Marquis of Archers) for reasons no-one has bothered to determine. Noting the below, perhaps they should have.
Licence
On the evening of Beltane just before the 1st Meadow the Hellfire tm targeting system for the Newhaven castle defense system assigned a hitherto unseen colour. Blue targets replaced all current targeting cells and over a period of two hours these faded to transparent then disappeared. The earth elementals created a plinth next to the main gate on top of which was placed a stone lectern. They then turned to stone pillars at the apexs of a pentacle formed from the frozen forms of the water elementals. On the lectern was a document written in some hideous legalise, next to which was a brass pottle of red ink. A note apended to the document stated "Your CDS licence has now expired. In order to continue service a signature of the owner/licensee is required on the attached document."

Just noticed the map appears to have a Lake Windermere.

Since ‘mere’ means ‘lake’, referring to Windermere as ‘Lake Windermere’ is tautologous, though common. Unless people want to live by "Lake Windy Lake" which is just a bit silly.

I would advise as they do in the UK simply calling it 'Windermere' and remove the 'Lake' bit :-)
That would make sense .. and I bet the locals do that .. but I can just see a lot of people calling it Lake Windermere out of habit .. or nor knowing the meaning of 'mere'. I bet there are several examples of the same thing on real world maps.

No worries though .. it can be fixed once we have a new map.
Well it kind of depends on the relationship between the languages involved. "Lake Rotorua" is a useful way of telling the lake and the city apart, and makes sense with the pattern of settlement involved.
I'm sure the locals, visiting nobs, tax collectors etc are nicely in-consistent :-)

Inter-planar portals do not occur naturally they are always caused by powerful mortals, immortals, or gods, many of whom work in mysterious ways.
Both, neither, I'm documenting thins encountered over the years, and throwing out ideas.
These are not hard and fast rules. I figure planar portals work like dark matter does, ask any two theoretical physisists how dark matter works and you'll get three different answers, each with proofs to back them up.
