Elven Portals

Before the War of Tears, many locations on Alusia, and a number of the Worlds of the Aether were connected via a web of portals.

The majority of these portals are now lost, destroyed, or simply in-operable. A few remain which are still usable.

General Information and Speculations

Many of the terrestrial Alusian portals are known to run along Ley Lines. Some philosophers have speculated that since mana flows more easily along ley lines then constructing portals in this way may either make their creation easier, or may generate power for the portals.

Garsen the Binder said there were Elvish portals active to the north (of Landfall) in 1826 (626wk), the time we visited him. He talked of large scale deforestation relating to the portals.

Known Portal Locations

Newhaven Portal

A large inactive portal gate has been created from the cliff at Newhaven. Nearby is a 'mana collector' device that continues to draws in mana from the surroundings. The mana from any spells being cast near here are 'sucked' into the device. This has been happening for at least 2000 years with unknown consequences.

Something extremely similar seems to be in effect beneath the Baron of Newcourt's castle, a side effect of which is the creation of crystal of amber that have magicical qualities. This mana collection device is currently maintained by a group of Liantamiré (autonomous elven golems in the form of crystalline spiders), who are awaiting the return of Ondovalietána (elven power-stone / crystal-wrights) who can explain why the original user of the power source is no longer responding to their requests. In point of fact the user of the power (and the entire complex above ground) was destroyed about the time of the War of Tears.

Telen Forest

The forest south of Telen is a meeting point of three ley-lines. At the point of meeting are 'standing stones' which are said to have been a great source of mana in the past and may have been a Portal or part of one.

The University

High in the mountains of Southern Terranova, near the middle of the Empire of the Sun are the remains of an ancient Elven university (the Imperial Thaumatic Collegium Oron Oiosollme [Mount Ever-White]). Within the ruins there is a partially functional portal hub. The portals here are usable by anyone but travellers are warned that the area is hard to get to, dangerous, and protected by ancient defences.

This hub has or had functional links to:

  • Tirion Carnil
    • [Castle Carnil] -- an ancient name for the planet Thunor -- unknown exactly where this leads.
  • Eldamar
    • [Elf-home] aka Kadath. The Kadath end was probably destroyed with the final destruction of that city (802wk).
  • Osto Mordostar
    • [City in the land of the Dark Warriors] -- unknown exactly where this leads.
  • Osto Nalta
    • [City of Glittering Reflections] aka Eidolon in Alfheim
  • Cirya Naira
    • [Ship of the Heart of the Flame]
  • Arta Nun
    • [Fort "Downbelow"]. The geographic location of this portal is not known, but it is deep underground, on the flat top of a tall pinnacle of rock with stairs spiralling down the outside of the pinnavle away into the utter darkness. The pinnacle has other portals on it including portals to:
  • Car Olath'air
    • [House of Olath'air] -- Elven name for Wotan. Unknown exactly where this leads.

The Drow Portals

Somewhere under the Alusian continent are working portals that connect the Drow cities to the rest of the portals. Use of these without an appropriate escort is deemed extremely dangerous.

Alfheim Portal

The precise location of the Alfheim portal is unknown, it may no longer be usable by mortals.

Lord Yo's Portal

Lord Yo is known to have a working portal in his island home. Using it without invitation is usually terminal. It may be that only Lord Yo can activate it.

Lord Yo is also known to have been quietly repairing some of the old elven portals.

Elven Isles

On the Elven Isles is a portal that can be activated to provide transport to a matching portal near Puerto Bozo, on New Destiny.

This is a reconstructed portal, built on the remains of an old Elven portal by William and Henri Mulberry. The portal appears as a circle of standing stones. Every sundown a mist rises within the circle to a height of some 12 feet. A minute later the mist sinks back into the earth and the contents of the two circles have swapped.

This portal can be used by anyone, but is guarded by elven forces.
