Realistically should Merfolk be considered Fae? I don't really think they fit well here. --Mandos 13:09, 24 Oct 2007 (NZDT)

They are humanoids. They have their own language. They seem more like faeries than sentient humanoid aquatics. Where do they fit better? You could make an argument for fantasticals, simply because that's a catch-all category. Sirens/mermaids lure men to their death, very much like Dryad/Fossegrim crosses, and they can appear inhumanly beautiful, and they come from the same set of greek myths as sylph/dryad/satyr/etc (though, also griffons, medusa, etc). Are you sure your Fae category isn't jsut too narrow? Fae can be seen as sylvan only, but then so can Elves (except for Drow, Erelheine, Teleri, Vanya-armi, city elves, grim questers and guild beasts). Mermaids seem to be salt-water fae, like nixies are fresh-water fae. I'm sure that there are some good reasons for not having them in Fae - let's hear them. --Andreww 13:17, 24 Oct 2007 (NZDT)

With my usual carefully considered arguments at the fore I shall start with.....they just don't seem like fae creatures :0) I was thinking maybe they fit into the same category as Elves as being sundered Fae. I guess they can stay :-) I have no real argument. --Mandos 14:02, 24 Oct 2007 (NZDT)
