The same thing happened to Galileo when observing Saturn. It wasan't until later that better instruments showed the ring system.


But people who've been jaunting around in aether ships could well have reported rings -- that said, I'd be just as happy if it didn't have them. Although we know these days that rings are pretty natural for gas giants, the image of saturn's rings is very earth (our real world) rather than Alusia, and could be easily foregone.
