Sanctuary Red Lanterns

The Street of Red Lanterns is not so much a street, as a subculture. Red lanterns are everywhere in Sanctuary, although there is a cluster between the Jewellers Quarter and the Maze, around the best known establishments of Aphrodisia House and the Lily Garden. Myrtis is the unofficial mayor of this community of brothels, gaming houses, pawnshops, money lenders and vendors of related wares. Red Lantern businesses come alive at sunset, when Sanctuary's citizens appear, many wrapped in cloaks to hide their identities from acquaintances and the muggers and cutpurses preying on the clientele. At this time too, unaffiliated ladies walk the streets, or troop behind the mansions of Uptown into the Promise of Heaven, to ply their trade, returning at sunrise. The evening patrol of Walegrin's city guards appears infrequently and with plenty of warning, making the streets an inviting place for all forms of business as the evening deepens into night.

Places

  • Aphrodisia House - the most expensive brothel in Sanctuary. The madam has airs, and the girls too much self-respect.
  • Lily Garden - the best brothel in Sanctuary. The girls are pretty and don't talk back; they understand what they are there for.
  • Dylan's - a cheap but friendly brothel.
  • House of Mermaids - something a little bit different.
  • House of Whips and Chains - a specialist establishment for discerning gentlemen.

People of Note

  • Amoli - Respected madam of the Lily Garden
  • Myrtis - madam of Aphrodisia House, political player.

Law

The Red Lantern district is within the purview of Walegrin, but he tends to keep a lax rein on the area, so long as everyone is enjoying themselves and money is changing hands. Red Lantern businesses in other parts of Sanctuary are often owned or protected by local crime lords.
