Ritual of Create Garden

  • Effects: Through this ritual, an Earth College adept creates a garden in an open area of ground, which may be an uncultivated area with no structures, or an untended garden area. Large trees in the area, and watercourses remain, but undergrowth and weeds are tidied up. This ritual has the following effects:

It will always nullify any scarring terrain spell cast on an area of which the garden is a part.

  1. The ground enclosed in the garden becomes fertile soil, and is under an effect similar to Bless Crops (at the same rank), which persists after the adept leaves the garden.
  2. The garden can be enclosed by a hedge of appropriate shrubbery, which counts as a Wall of Thorns (at the same rank). This may have a gate made of local materials, which may be under the effect of a Mage Lock (at the same rank). When the Adept leaves, these lose their magical properties.
  3. While the Adept remains in the garden, the Adept controls the weather in the garden.


This ritual may be cast in three ways:

The Wilderness Garden

  • Cast Time: 5 mins
  • Duration: 1 hour + 1/rank.
  • Area affected: 40 sq ft + 20/Rank
  • This is the basic garden consisting simply of a grassy lawn surrounded by a hedge (as above). Should the adept require it, this may include a central area arranged with wood and stones for a fireplace.

The Country Garden

  • Cast Time: 1 hour
  • Duration: 1 day + 1/rank
  • Area affected: 80 sq ft + 40/Rank
  • This is a more complex garden. In addition to the grassy lawn, there can be vegetable and flowerbeds (depending on which seeds (bulbs etc) are sown, or are native in the soil). These will grow rapidly to full size, and produce seasonal produce, sufficient to feed 1 person +1/rank for a day. This can include common herbs at low ranks, and herbs of increasing rarity as rank increases. There can be trees planted (up to 1 + 1/rank), which will take a full day to grow to maturity and will also fruit in season. There can also be structures created (up to 1 + 1/2 ranks). Required materials must be present. These structures must be appropriate to the garden and may include a fireplace, shed, pergola, gazebo, water feature, statues etc. The quality of any artisan or artistic work will depend upon the adept's rank in appropriate skills.

The Private Garden

  • Cast Time: 24 hours
  • Duration: Permanent
  • Area affected: 160 sq ft + 80/Rank
  • An adept may have only one private garden in existence at any one time. In addition to the features of the country garden, this garden may include a small cottage among its structures. It may also include a central druid grove, which will, after a year and day has passed, and the garden tended regularly by the adept, become an Earth College Sanctuary conferring +10 to the BC of Earth College magic. Should the adept cast this version of the ritual elsewhere, or cease to tend the private garden at least once a season, this effect ceases. The adept may, however, cast the ritual again in the same location in order to increase the area of the private garden.
