Commonly Used Syntax
Linking
[[Link]] to a page called Link
If you want different linking and viewable text then use:
[[Link|text you want to show]]
To link outside the wiki use:
[http://www.somewhere.com/somepage.html text to show]
Everything after the first space will be shown, in the example above "text to show" will be displayed.
Headings
= Heading 1 = == Heading 2 == === Heading 3 ===
Headings get used to make the Table of Contents that appears at the top of the page. A TOC will get automatically created if you have 3 or more headings on a page. If you don't want a TOC you can disable the automatic creation by adding to the top of you page the magic words:
__NOTOC__
Note that there are 2 underscores in that command.
Or place the Table of Contents somewhere specific with __TOC__ or for a right-aligned TOC like this page has you could include something like this at the top of the page: <div style="float: right; width: 25%; margin-left: 10px; ">__TOC__</div>
Lists
* Bulleted List ** Bul. List 2nd Level
# Numbered List ## Num List 2nd Level
You can also mix and match * and #
# Numbered List #* Indented bulleted line (rather than numbered)
Tables
Official Help Page for Table syntax You can use standard HTML for tables or the Wiki Special Codes for them, the end result should be the same.
<table border=1> <tr><th> Col A </th><th> Col B </th><th> Col C </th></tr> <tr><td> A1 </td><td> B1 </td><td> C1 </td></tr> <tr><td> A2 </td><td> B2 </td><td> C2 </td></tr> </table> {| border=1 ! Col A !! Col B !! Col C |- | A1 || B1 || C1 |- | A2 || B2 || C2 |}
Col A | Col B | Col C |
---|---|---|
A1 | B1 | C1 |
A2 | B2 | C2 |
Text in tables can be multi-line, and include lists and headings. Cells can be merged, and their colours changed:
{| border=1 |+ Table Caption |- ! Col A !! Col B !! Col C |- ||A1 has three lines of text. This is the second line. And the third. || B1 has a list *Item 1 *Item 2 *Item 3 || C1 even has a heading: ====Like This==== And some text to go with it. |- |colspan=2| A2 & B2 have been merged |style="background:#ffd;"| C2 is yellow. |}
Col A | Col B | Col C |
---|---|---|
A1 has three lines of text.
This is the second line. And the third. |
B1 has a list
|
C1 even has a heading:
Like ThisAnd some text to go with it. |
A2 & B2 have been merged | C2 is yellow. |
Check out this cool tool html2wiki-tables it converts HTML tables into Wiki format tables.
Templates
Templates are a shorthand way of adding some text to a page.
You include a template using curly braces, e.g. {{templatename|param1|param2|param3}}
You can use the template inclusion to include any wiki page by qualifying it with the namespace to override the assumed default of the template namespace. A : without a name implies the default namespace which is where all of our wiki pages are by default. E.g. To include the Horse page in the current page: {{:Horse}}
User Stylesheets
You can define your own styles (formatting) for the site, enter css formatting into a page called User:UserName/monobook.css (NB assumes you use the Monobook look and feel) and your formatting will be applied when you are logged in. E.g. User:Stephen/monobook.css
There is also a page that applies the style for all users, but only site admins can alter this page.

Player/User Pages
When you create a login to the Wiki, you get a My Page link in the standard menu. This links to a page named User:Username. Please use this as your player/user page as the Wiki automatically creates links to it from a couple of places.
What you put in your My Page is up to you but I think it's a good place to say a bit about what sort of games you like/don't like, playing style, pet hates, etc. This could be a help to GMs (and Players) that like to research their players to tweak their game for maximum enjoyment.
If you GM then you could add in a bit about your GMing style and the sorts of things you like to see in players. As per the GM pages on Dragonquest.org.
Your My Page is also a good place to experiment with Wiki features as you're only messing things up for yourself if it goes badly. :)
Character Pages
When I started the wiki using a prefix for characters seemed a good way of dealing with conflicting names and seemed to fit with the Wiki way of doing things. With the next major version (which we're running now) we get Categories which are a great way of indexing and referencing pages. But they don't work well with prefixes. So out with the old and in with the new!
The current recommendation is to name your character page with the name your character is most commonly known by. This means that if people link to you it will usually work on their first guess as to what your page is.
When there is a conflict then they can be resolved as seems best for the situation. Potential resolutions are:
- Mud-Wrestling - winner takes all ;=)
- Qualify one or both of the names a bit. E.g. Jade the Dwarf, Plane of Haven, Count Aryan, Aryan the Adventurer, Aryan of Ebola, etc.
- Refer to the alternates at the end of the page. E.g. See Also: Jade the Warrior.
- An index page which refers to the new locations of each conflicting page.
To link to the DQ Character Database you can put in a Wiki link like this: [http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/pc/dqc_view.php?dqc_id=000999 CharName]. To find out the URL for a character the simplest approach is to follow the link on the Main Page of the wiki to "Guild Characters (Read Only)", find the character you want in the list and then copy the URL of the link to the details of the character.
Character Style
If you are familiar with css, then create a class for your character, test it in your style page, then request an admin to add it to the site style page.
That way you can apply character specific formatting to text and blocks of text.
E.g. stylesheet:
.Aqualina { background-color: #00ffff; border: thin solid red; font-family: arial, sans-serif; }
Wiki page:
<span class="Aqualina">I want to go swimming!</span>
General Editing Guidelines
Check your links after you have added the content. If the Page you are linking to exists then ensure that what you have entered as your link does connect to the existing page.
Try to be consistent with what has gone before, the strength of this sort of site lies in links to the same bit of information arriving at the same place. If you disagree with what someone has called a page or whether the bit of information should have its own page it is better to discuss this with the other contributor and then change what's there to what you agree on than to go your own way and end up with two pages, neither of which contains all of the updated info. - Hope that makes sense. :)
Their Own Page or a Sub-section?
Should the person or place I am adding have their own page or just a section of an existing page?
Consider whether the people/places you are adding are only pertinent to their parent page or if they are significant enough to justify their own page.
Also consider how much information there is to say about them. A paragraph or two is better included as a sub-section of another page but a page or more potentially with several sub-sections of its own should definitely have its own page.
E.g. Theros the wiccan is only relevant to Westport & Eltrandor, he has no particular influence/activity outside of these areas. The info about him is only a paragraph or 2, it can be included in the Eltrandor page.
Lord Yo, while generally only encountered in Kin Lu, is more significant in Alusia than Kin Lu is and has influence/activities all over Alusia (and sometimes beyond). There is also potentially a lot of information specifically about him. He should have his own page.
For examples in between it's a judgement call, but it is easier to start someone off as a paragraph relating to the town or barony they live in and upgrade them to their own page when they become more significant than it is to downgrade them later.
As another example: Richard, Count of Foxcourt, has often been encountered in other areas and has influenced events in other areas. He should probably have his own page. Compared with the other Counts of Bowcourt, who are generally unknown and may not even have been named. They can be included as part of the description of their County or maybe just a mention in the Bowcourt page that can be separated out when a GM uses them and fleshes them out some more.
