Recreational drugs are those herbs and alchemical concoctions that sit astride the line between beneficence and harm. Occasional use of small quantities of any drug is pleasant and not overtly harmful, but a single large dose can act as a poison. Repeated exposure over time reduces the efficacy while increasing the body's tolerance to larger amounts. This increased tolerance to a drug almost always results in a strong need to maintain that tolerance by continued usage; this need is usually referred to as cravings, addiction, or the beast. Side effects of withdrawing from regular usage varies by drug, from headaches and irritability through to death, or in extreme cases, becoming a drug wight.
